Orthodontics as a facial transformation.
Teeth are the centre of the face – and it is their alignment, proportions and visibility that determine whether a face appears harmonious, rested and attractive. That is why orthodontic analysis always begins with the face – not the teeth.
We assess facial proportions and symmetry – how the teeth fit the features, how much of the incisors shows at rest and when smiling, how the smile line follows the lower lip. Excessively flared incisors dominate the face – one of the more common problems, and one that can be corrected effectively.
After completing orthodontic therapy, children, adolescents and adults show improved body image and greater confidence – which translates into reduced anxiety in social situations. PubMed Central
TMJ status and the face
An improper position of the temporomandibular joint is often the hidden cause of malocclusions that affect the whole face. An untreated TMJ can lead to an open bite – the face appears “open”, with muscle tension visible at rest – or a retruded lower jaw, where the profile appears “bird-like” and the lower face loses its proportions.
