A narrow palate and a constricted dental arch are among the most common problems in children, leading to crowding, posterior crossbites and difficulty breathing through the nose.
A fixed palatal expander is an appliance mounted on the molars, fitted with a screw activated at home according to the doctor’s instructions. It works by applying continuous, controlled pressure to the palatal suture, gradually widening the upper jaw.
Why from age 6? That is when the first permanent molars erupt – the anchoring pillar for the expander. The palatal suture is still fully active and bone adaptation is fast. Early intervention often eliminates the need for extractions later on.
A key advantage: a fixed appliance – The appliance is fixed – there is nothing to remember to put in. It works 24 hours a day, with no risk of being set aside “for a moment” and forgotten. Especially important for children who are not always ready for the responsibility of a removable appliance.
